The media plays an important role in how we perceive and understand suicide and mental illness. Mindframe has developed resources for media professionals to ensure the responsible reporting of mental illness and suicide.
The media has an important role to play in influencing social attitudes towards, and perceptions of, suicide and mental illness. Most Australian media professionals report suicide and mental illness responsibly.
Reporting suicide and mental illness is a resource developed by Mindframe, to support the Australian Government Department of Health's national strategy for promoting responsible reporting of suicide and mental illness in the media.
This resource is specifically developed for media professionals. It is designed to provide journalists with current contacts, research sources, facts and statistics. It also provides suggestions about elements to consider when reporting on suicide and mental illness.
Specific information and resources have been developed for reporting mental illness, suicide and self-harm and are available together with a full resource kit for media professionals.
All Mindframe resources can be downloaded from the Mindframe website.
