Light the way by becoming a Black Dog Institute Luminary
When you leave a gift in your will, you’ll join the Luminaries — a community of like-minded supporters who are lighting the way for a mentally healthier future by enabling Black Dog Institute to invest in bigger, bolder evidence-based mental health research.
From community-led approaches to suicide prevention in Australia, all the way to an online self-help program currently being trialled by NASA for a manned mission to Mars — the Luminaries are helping to further world-leading, cutting-edge programs, to shine a light on mental health across the globe and the galaxy.
Just a small percentage of your estate can have a big impact to help us understand, treat and prevent mental illness into the future. Becoming a Luminary is a way of leaving a more powerful legacy for generations to come than many of us are able to achieve during our lifetimes.
Government funding goes some way to supporting these programs, however for every dollar we receive from government, we must raise another $1.68 from generous donors like our Luminaries to continue innovative programs like these.*
Every year, one in five Australians will experience a mental health issue. It's something that touches every single one of us. The health, social and economic costs affect not only individuals but also their families, businesses, employers, communities and the entire global economy.
At the Black Dog Institute, we're harnessing the power of research, working hard to create a world that's mentally healthier for everyone.
We’re working to save lives every day. We are a global leader in our field, and the only independent medical research institute focused exclusively on mental health across the lifespan. This makes us unique in our ability to deliver outstanding research and transform it into practical programs and services that change lives.
Connecting research with people keeps us right on the cutting edge of new ideas, evidence, technology and innovation where the real breakthroughs are happening.
Our aim is to reduce the severity and incidence of mental illness, actively reduce suicide rates, innovate new models of care and create easily accessible solutions to empower everyone to look after their mental health.
We're making progress, but there is still much more to be done. Your support helps us to continue to pioneer mental health work that works.
Tim has known the Black Dog Institute since our beginnings in the 1980s as the Mood Disorders Unit at the former Prince Henry Hospital. He's passionate about mental health and wants to play his part for future generations.
"My children know that I care deeply about this issue so they weren’t surprised when I decided to include a bequest to the Black Dog Institute in my will. Indeed, they are very supportive."
By joining Luminaries like Tim, you'll be supporting the prevention of mental illness, to build resilience in our young people, and to produce a healthier more mindful society in which the incidence of mental illness and suicide is reduced. Please consider becoming a Luminary to allow your vision to create a mentally healthier world to live on through a gift in your will.
If you have a will already, then all you need to do is add a codicil – a short legal amendment to your existing will.
If you do not have a will, then the first thing you need to do is get some legal advice to create one. Your Solicitor or the Public Trustee in your state can help with this.
Although there are many ways to include Black Dog Institute in your will, these are the three easiest options:
- A percentage of your estate: this is often regarded as the most flexible way to give as you don’t have to adjust the value of your gift to account for inflation, or changes to your total assets.
- A percentage of your residuary estate: after you have taken care of your loved ones in your will, give a percentage of the remainder of your estate — as little as 5% or 10% can make a huge difference.
- Fixed sums or assets: leave a specific sum, shares or property to Black Dog Institute; this may need to be changed over the years to account for inflation and changes to your circumstances.
'I give, free of all duties and taxes, * ____________ to the Black Dog Institute, ABN: 12 115 954 197, for its general purposes to improve treatment, diagnosis and outcomes in the field of mental health. I declare that the receipt of a Director of the Institute or other authorised Officer will be a sufficient discharge to my executor(s) or trustee.'
* insert one of the following:
- Option A: all (or __%) of my estate
- Option B: all (or __%) of my residuary estate
- Option C: The sum of $ __ (amount) or details of asset(s) such as shares or property
